New Perspectives in the Collection
Drauke Dannert – Stone upon Stone
Marion Verboom – Loplop
Christoph Westermeier – Sedona Bird
until 5.7.2026
As part of the New Perspectives series, artists Frauke Dannert,
Marion Verboom, and Christoph Westermeier open up new ways
of looking at Surrealism in dialogue with the museum’s collection.
On the upper floor, Frauke Dannert (*1979 in Herdecke, lives and works
in Cologne) presents the large-scale wall painting Stein auf Stein. The
work invites visitors to journey into the world of Max Ernst and the desert
landscape of Sedona. Through its immersive play of color and form, the
installation conveys a sense of place while offering insight into Ernst’s
creative processes.
Marion Verboom (*1983 in Nantes, lives and works in Paris) has developed
new sculptures and installations specifically for the museum, on view across
both floors. Her works challenge conventional notions of sculpture and
materiality. With their surreal qualities, they recall Max Ernst’s assemblages
and engage in a playful dialogue with his work.
Christoph Westermeier (*1984 in Cologne, lives and works in Düsseldorf)
takes a research-based artistic approach to Max Ernst, Surrealism, and its
intersections with colonial history. Shown in the context of the D-Paintings
on the upper floor, his collages and prints foreground questions of cultural
appropriation and authorship, drawing on Ernst’s life and oeuvre as points
of departure.
