Max Beckmann – Day and Dream.
A Journey from Berlin to New York
September 27, 2020 to February 28, 2021 at Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR
Beginning September 27, the Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR will be presenting a special exhibition on Max Beckmann (1884–1950) called “Day and Dream. A Journey from Berlin to New York”. Selected works shed light on important stations, persons and thematic complexes having to do with the life of this painter and printmaker - one of the great artists of the modern era - who was born in Leipzig and died in New York City. Works on paper, paintings, and prints that include lithograph portfolio works such as the eponymous “Day and Dream” and “Berliner Reise” (Berlin Journey) will be showcased in Brühl.
For the very first time, print run editions will be displayed in dialogue with the unusual hand-pulled prints the artist had dedicated to his first wife Minna Tube between 1913 and 1924, revealing Max Beckmann’s great sensitivity as a printmaker.
This exhibition comes about in cooperation with the Beckmann estate, and is being mounted by guest curator Ralph Jentsch together with the team at the Max Ernst Museum.
