Ilinca Fechete, Foreign Movement Across Space, 2021, oil on canvas / painting

Max Ernst Grant 2022

Ilinca Fechete receives Max Ernst Grant 2022

Exhibition from April 2--17, 2022

The City of Brühl awarded the 52nd Max Ernst Grant to Ilinca Fechete, born in Romania in 2002. She studied photography and painting in Ontario, Canada, afterwards she joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 2020 to dedicate herself primarily to photography, as a student of Prof. Dieter Rehm and Prof. Michael Hofstetter.

Ilinca Fechete convinced the jury of the Max Ernst Grant this year with enormous creativity and joy of experimentation, with diversity of forms of expression. The jury praised the sovereignty of the young artist, using several media of artistic expression, free of ideologies. With an eye on authenticity, connection, identity and transcendence, Ilinca Fechete tries to express what is not directly visible. She seemingly operates with a light hand, simultaneously measuring the world and investigating light. She zooms close on her subjects, adopts different perspectives, plays with blur, and yet always gives us earthbound. With the desire of introspection on this journey of pictorial invention, and with the wish to take the viewer along on this journey, she speaks of the "breath that is the surface where the waves of expression break", of the "light of one's own journey to self-discovery".

The award ceremony and the exhibition opening will take place on April 2, the birthday of Max Ernst.
